I am coming back from an almost year break. I Install the game from a download I have since Seekers was released. After install and download/update, the game works fine. I can get in and play like normal. When I exit the game, install and launch Windower 4, POL opens and works fine. When I click Play it fades away like normal. Then windows says POL.exe had a problem and must close. FFXI doesn't even start. I have not made any .DAT changes or anything. Trying to launch POL after this (with out windower), it will let me sign in and get to Play but when it fades away, I get the error you get when normal, non-windower FFXI exits full screen mode and crashes. Uninstalling POL and reinstalling it fixes it until I try Windower again. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I've always been able to get this to work.

I run Windows 8 (not 8.1) and have ran win8 in the past with windower working just fine. I tried without loading any plugins but I don't think that is the issue since it crashes before FFXI even opens up. I'm sorry if this issue has been posted before, I've read through many "crashing" threads but nothing matched my issue as far as I can tell. Please help.

I have a second hard drive. I will install windows 7 onto that hard drive and see if I can fix the problem. But in the mean time, any ideas?

This is a very common issue with Windows 8, and unfortunately we're not sure what's causing it. Some say that downloading older NVIDIA drivers helps it, but it doesn't seem to work for everyone. The driver that usually breaks it seems to be 311.xx.

So your saying it has to do with Windows 8. Meaning if I install windows 7 on my other drive I should be able to play the game w/ windower just fine?

Yeah, as far as I know the startup crash has never occurred on Windows 7.
