Hey guys. Soo, I'm having issues here. I had FFXI installed on Windows XP many years ago, I tried to play it again and it gave me a disc write error on a new computer this time. Sooo okay, I figured upgrade, right? I installed Windows 8.1 disc.. now I got passed the disc write error and I'm onto POL crashing before I get to ANY screen. I downloaded the file off of amazon, and it worked fine before on my dad's computer about a year ago, on XP..

I've tried to read up on this before, hence the topic name.. and none of their solutions are seeming to work. The whole direct play thing, running as administrator or even the changing compatibility settings to run as XP/Vista/7, etc. As soon as I open POL, it just crashes. & I searched for polboot.exe in my files and it doesn't seem to exist. I bought the whole Seekers Collection off Amazon so I know it's legit. Does anybody have any ideas to why the hell I'm just destined to never play FFXI again? Or hopefully an idea on a solution.. :/ lol. Get back to me guys, any assistance helps. I just wanna play already, and yes.. I even tried downloading windower and running it through that, stil.. nothing.

Just to clarify, you're saying that PlayOnline Viewer crashes immediately, before any windows open, regardless of whether you use Windower or not?

You may want to check your anti-virus software. You might also try updating your drivers.

        P.S. polboot.exe is in C:\Program Files (x86)\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\ToolsUS by default.

Yes, as soon as the install finished. I run POL. It says POL Viewer and my version, but it still crashes. & Yes, Windower makes no difference at all.  I have no anti-virus software. And I JUST installed Windows 8.1 yesterday, does it not come with all the drivers?

          & polboot.exe, I found it. Didn't work either.. FML.

Did you try re-installing POL Viewer? Sounds like something basic about the installation is corrupt. Where did you install it from, Steam? Otherwise you may need the Windows Vista+ version of POL Viewer.

The Seekers Collection from Amazon, so he should have a fairly recent version of PlayOnline Viewer.

Most definitely not! Windows generally ships with generic or old drivers for hardware; they are enough to get you up and running, but not sufficient for playing games. It will update some drivers through Windows Update, but in the case of graphics card drivers these are usually at least a month or two old. At the very least you should go to AMD's or Nvidia's website and download the latest drivers for your GPU.

That doesn't happen without Windower? Also, please open a new thread for each issue, makes it much easier to manage and keep track of them.

Still doesn't answer the question though, I'm having same issue as him with windower pol login crashing and its not been a fix for it in months. Its got same issue in Windows 8, 8.1, and windows 10. Works on windows 7 but lets face it windows 7 wont be around forever and if its the last OS windower works on bye bye windower. Fix plz, old skool Windower user.

First, there wasn't a question to answer, there was simply a statement that he was having an issue, so the attitude is really uncalled for. Arcon requested that he please open a new topic (which he did), instead of hijacking an unrelated thread.

Second, you are definitely in the minority here; approximately 20% of our users are running Windower successfully on Windows 8 without any issues, so your assertion that Windows 7 is the last OS that windower works on is clearly false. In addition 70% of our users are on Windows 7, and this is showing no signs of changing any time soon (that number has actually increased slightly over the last few months), so for now this is our primary focus.

And finally, we do not get paid to work on Windower, we don't even accept donations. We are a completely volunteer team working on Windower in our spare time, and the only reason we continue doing this is because we enjoy it. People coming here and demanding that we "fix plz", are not appreciated. We have very limited resources, and we must keep our priorities straight. Fixing a bug that a minority of users experience, that we can't reproduce, and haven't been able to get reliable crash dumps for, obviously ranks low on our priority list.

                  That's because I don't know the answer :)

[…] I'm having same issue as him with windower pol login crashing and its not been a fix for it in months.

This is the first time I'm hearing about it, so if we didn't fix it in "months" it's because you haven't reported it sooner. If you've posted it on some forum it will likely not get you very far, we don't frequent every forum and even if we do we often skim through it, and if errors aren't obvious and simple to fix we tend to forget about them. That's precisely why we have an issue tracker\, where we can review such issues with a number of organisational tools and keep them from drowning under heaps of forum chatter. If you have an actual bug instead of a support question, we would always recommend to post it there.
