    Hello,

I'm in the process of moving my Son from a Dell L502X to an Alienware 17 (mid 2013), as part of a Dell exchange program.

I can get FFXI to run "under" Windower, but when I try to have FFXI run without Windower it fails.  The error message is the one about FFXI not being able to initalize Direct3D and the error code is -1.  While we hardly ever run FFXI without Windower, it is nice to have it working (in case anything ever is wrong with Windower).

Anyone have suggestions on what could be stopping FFXI from running standaline (and thus requiring Windower).

    Thank you so very much,

    I. B. Halliwell and Ramrat on Ragnarok (both formerly of Caitsith)

I have two hypotheses: 1. it may be a driver issue, and 2. enabling (the official) windowed mode might mitigate the problem. If enabling windowed mode fixes it, then you'll need to be aware that Windower forcibly disables windowed mode when it runs, as it does not work with this setting, so you will need to manually switch it in the FFXI config tool every time you want to run without Windower.

Again, these are just guesses. Either one, or both may be wrong.
