Been working for me, no problem - it runs in x86 emulation pretty much automatically. Step one is to not let it install to the "Program Files (x86)" directory, nor to the Desktop. Beyond that, I haven't tweaked it, I don't think.

At this point, we don't officially support steam :(

The latest build of Windower and most every plugin work near perfectly on Windows 7 x64 and the Steam version of the game.

Make sure you don't have multiple versions of the game installed.

Make sure you have the latest build of Windower.

Make sure you have disabled User Account Control (UAC).

Make sure you don't also have the Windowed mode selected in the FINAL FANTASY XI Configuration tool.

Try running Windower with Admin Privileges.

Try reinstalling the Steam version or updating the game fully with the game launched normally via Steam.

The answer is "Yes." The serials can only be used once but you can login from any client, be it PC, PS2, backwards compatible PS3 or 360 as long as you have your account ID and password.

I must add that for most people Windower works fine with the Steam version of the game, there aren't any modifications to the Steam version outside of installation directory. You shouldn't need to purchase a physical retail copy when you already own the game via Steam. Also if it somehow came down to that you can easily "pirate" the install discs from the internet at many sources. I wouldn't consider it illegal as you've already purchased the game and the SQUARE ENIX makes almost all of it's revenue not from physical game sales of FINAL FANTASY XI but from monthly/subscription fees instead.

In a somewhat related question, with the servers down, is there any good way of testing to see if your current install is working? I can't even get past the first pol screen because it's trying to force an update. Optimally, I'd prefer to have my fresh install pre-updated so I don't add to the pol traffic when the game comes back up but since I just switched to windows 7 I have no previous win7 install to copy over.

Nope. Every time you start POL up, it does a version check - and all the update data for POL is on the POL servers. Same thing for the FFXI servers.

If you had an old-but-up-to-date install on a hard drive somewhere, there's a registry hack (that I do not know) to fix the directory (dunno if it'd work between different versions of windows). As you've got a new install? As far as I've ever seen, gotta wait for POL to come back up.

Running the program as Administrator did the trick for me ... thanks

on an unrelated note ... is there a way for me to put FFXI on another machine without having to update it for 9 hours?

just to go over the commons

- Disable or turn off UAC
- Don't install it to the C:\Program Files (x86) folder
- Try disable windows Aero effects
- Make sure you are running Launcher.exe not Launcher_gui.exe
- Make sure SE's Window mode is unchecked in the FFXI config

also does the game load up without windower since you reinstalled you OS?
If you install from a cd Im not sure if they include the win vista / 7 playonline version on the cd.

what I do is I just make a backup copy of my Playonline / ffxi folder to a backup drive.
Then on the new pc or install i just reinstall the game. Then just delete the new install folders and replace them with the ones I just created and put on my backup drive

When you log in and all it will say cannot find version, then it will preform a file check. It will check all the files then log you in without any extra downloading. It will only do this once as well the next time you log in it will be as usual.

Could you provide some more information? I'm running the newest version on windows 7 x64 and it's working fine... How did you install? What "didn't work" ?

Oddly enough, I have my copy of FFXI installed to Program Files (x86) and it runs fine on Win7 x64 ... worked fine on Vista 64 too before my MB had a meltdown (unrelated causes).

FFXI should always be installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\Playonline\Square Enix\Final Fantasy XI (I believe). Windower is what should be installed elsewhere :)

I see this on an earlier post.

Quote

Try disable windows Aero effects

First of all, how do you do that?

Second of all, why turn it off, what general problem is fixed by doing this? is it the flickering on certain textures?

Third, it seems like there is "shearing" or "tearing" issue due to vsync (game FPS locked at 30 while monitor refresh rate is higher), what do you do to counter this?

Thank you.
