There are other forums about this but the problem being is that I tried two different things and they each worked once, but then it goes back to the same problem.

Things that I've done:

-Turned off UAC
-Ran programs as administrator
-Changed compatibility and permissions
-Replaced hook.dll file with new one (worked ONCE)
-Windower V4 trick (worked ONCE)
-Reinstalled windower multiple times, putting it in its own folder each time
-Installed latest video card drivers

Specs:

-Windows 7 x32 bit
-4 GB Ram
-ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series

If anyone has any new input or things that worked for them, I would greatly appreciate it because I'm at my wits end, and I can't stand having to keep remaking my macros... >.<

It seems like more and more people are coming out of the woodworks with this same problem (so to speak). :/ There's no known fix for it if your driver is 10.2, as far as I know. Perhaps try downgrading to 9.11 or 9.10. Could you elaborate on the v4 trick you mentioned?

The V4 trick where you load V4, have it at the account screen, then load Windower, and log in with Windower, and then close V4. I did some variation on that, I think I kept V4 opened longer and thats when it worked the second time, but now it doesn't work.

I got it working again, but I can't keep it working. It's like pure luck with the V4 trick.

Dosn't seem to help at all for me. Currently playing the game in default FFXI windowed mode with no plugins... which is driving me loopy :/

Has anyone tried the older driver releases? This is often found to be the problem--new drivers aren't always the best. The 10.2's have had issues with several games on other forums already.

9.1 or 9.11 I believe are the two more popular ones. I've been running 9.1 in XP Pro on my 4850 with no issues for a long time now.

FINALLY I can post now. I've been in validation for 3 days.

Anyways I have found a fix for me that so far has worked 100% of the time. Install fraps and have FRAPS running before you load the Windower. I'm prolly not using the most recent version of FRAPS but it shouldn't matter.

As an addition to this, if anyone is running an ATI 4890 on Win7 x64 and are NOT getting this problem, whatever you do, don't upgrade to the Catalyst 10.3's when they come out. Just did this with driver's from Asus and it will cause this problem.
If you are set on getting the 10.3's then the Fraps workaround seems to work (for me at least). But I found it easier just to rollback to Catalyst 10.2.

So for ATI cards at least, im leaning towards a weird driver problem.

I'm having same problem, it appears.
- Just installed FFXI on Windows 7
- Installed Windower
- Updated hook.dll with one in Sticky
- UAC is off
- Both POL and the Windower applications are all "Run as Administrator"

Alt+Tab crashes my game.

Not sure what to do :/

What video card and driver version?

Hate to keep bringing it up... but probly better than 90% of the time, it is a newer driver problem. Perhaps someone has it stable with your same video card family and they can tell you what driver release is working for them.

Here's one site for driver archives: www.guru3d.com

My Toshiba Satellite A215 laptop has a ATI Radeon X1200 video card and dxdiag says the Driver version is 8.393.0.0.

Here's the thing. I played this for a year on this laptop with Windows Vista. I upgraded to Win 7 a week or two ago, and had no problems installing and playing using Windower either. I got a virus yesterday and had to reinstall Win 7, and have been getting this problem now. I did nothing different that I can think of between the install two weeks ago and today.

I haven't tried the Fraps thing, as I'd hoped to avoid installing software I don't use on this clean install...

EDIT: I disabled every extension, loaded it, and it worked. I then loaded each extension individually, alt+tabbed, and no crash. So I've re-enabled them in the init.txt. We'll see what happens next time...

EEP! that's a really old driver release--like back to 2007 or something. You may have gotten some M$HQL driver files mixed in there with the re-install.

May be worth grabbing a slightly newer catalyst driver (maybe even go up to 9.1 if possible) and running it through ATIMod if needed to install it for the laptop.

To expand on the issues this causes:

You cannot bind keys.
You can open the console (using /console console_toggle), but you cannot type in the console.(You'll still type in the game instead.)
You can still use most plug-ins fine.

SLI 280m - Driver 196.86(beta)
Fraps 3.2.1
