Is Sygate still the way to go for a free firewall? I'm using XP Home, no router between me and the web (eek! must fix!), and the free versions of Avira antivirus, and Malwarebytes. I websurf with Firefox loaded with all the usual protections. I have Sygate right now but since it's not supported I'm worried.

I used to use the Spybot/Avast combo but they seem to have been superseded.

P.S. Thanks for the details on protecting Firefox and IE. I happily tweaked my AdBlock and NoScript the second I found your post. :)

I used Sygate Personal Firewall for years, but recently switched to Comodo.

Main site: http://www.comodo.com/
Firewall download: http://www.comodo.co...p?prod=firewall

I still run Sygate on my old machine, and Comodo was a relatively recent switch, but it appears to have most of the same functionality as Sygate.

Ya know, I think I'm sticking with Sygate. I used Comodo for a while, but I had some problems with it on the gaming PC. It works fine of the laptop. I'm going to put the router back in line later today and call it done.

I had to rebuild my hard drive about a month ago and re-downloaded all my non-game software. This time I'm going with open source across the board, and I'm liking it. The only proprietary stuff I have is Windows and my games. Hmmm, I better find an open source thread to finish this convo in, I was about to get all excited about it. :D

The OP's Adblock Plus filter links are outdated; "EasyElement+Easylist" in OP is now just EasyList, and is found at https://easylist-dow...rg/easylist.txt . "ABP Tracking Filter" in OP is now included in EasyPrivacy, which can be found at https://easylist-dow...easyprivacy.txt . Great guide altogether, although I'm on Chrome. It always makes me feel uneasy because of the lack of NoScript, but I haven't had any problems yet. Maybe I should just go back to Firefox, and get rid of that pesky "yet" in that sentence.

Reg: Chrome
1) handles object permissions differently, so it's harder for something to get out and cause too much havoc.
2) has extensions, just the same as Firefox. I used to recommend AdThwart, but they've been letting a bunch through lately.
