I think one of the best improvements that was made to FFXIV over FFXI was the controller setup. Activating macros and switching between macro palletes is so much easier. You almost have to play FFXIV to see how much better it is, but I'll try to do a brief explanation of how it works for those unfamiliar. Instead of holding down a trigger button, using the D pad to highlight the macro and then pressing enter, you just hold down R1 or L1, then hit one of the buttons on the D pad or the circle, square, triangle or X buttons (aka face buttons).

They also made it easier to switch between macro palettes. For that you would hit R2, then one of the D pad buttons or face buttons. Would anyone knowledgeable enough be able to make an addon that accomplishes this? I'm sure that there might be more ways to customize button mappings.

You could maybe use something like Xpadder to map L1 to Ctrl and R1 to Alt. Map the face buttons to the correct keys so they perform their normal functions then use Windower key binds to execute macros. You probably won't be able to reliably emulate the L1+R1 and R1+L1 combos; at least, it won't be easy to do, since they're order-dependent, but the rest should be pretty simple to get working. A similar setup can be used to switch macro bars.
